The winner of the 2019 Bradley & Stuckey-French Prize for the Essay is “Where I Was From” by Steven Moore.

The Bradley & Stuckey-French Prize is dedicated to the memory of essayists, scholars and friends, William Bradley and Ned Stuckey-French, intended to honor their legacy and commitment to nonfiction and the essay form--the literary history, dynamic present, and promising future. Both Ned and William were not only advocates for the essay but also for social justice, equality, and inclusivity. Both men were caring friends to many other writers, excellent and dedicated teachers, and strong supporters of disenfranchised populations.

The Normal School: a Literary Magazine, for which William and Ned both contributed over the years, is proud to host this prize and to publish the winning essay in our online magazine.

The Bradley & Stuckey-French Prize was judged by an Advisory Board comprised of William's friends and colleagues and it is generously supported financially by an anonymous group of writers known as The Maiden Aunts of Literature.

Advisory Board: Steven Church, Christian Exoo, Dave Griffith, Emily Isaacson, Michael Kardos, Sandra Lambert, Dinty W. Moore, Michael Piafsky, Natalia Rachel Singer, Maureen Stanton, and Jill Talbot.
